Senator Durbin’s E-mail regarding The Energy Independence and Security Act

December 29, 2007 Mr. Keith  ________ IL 600 __ Dear Mr. ___________: Since you have contacted me in the past with your support for a new direction in America’s energy policy, I wanted to give you this update. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (H.R. 6) was signed into law on December 19, 2007. This legislation will reduce national gasoline consumption, extend our oil supply, save consumers money, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The measure increases Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020. This increase in fuel economy is expected to save between two million and 2.5 million barrels of oil per day by 2025. The reduced fuel expenses could keep billions of dollars in American consumers’ wallets each year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. I am pleased that Americans will finally see a meaningful increase in CAFE standards for the first time in three decades. In addition to mandating improved vehicle fuel efficiency, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 requires the federal government to reduce its oil consumption by 30 percent by 2015 and sets new efficiency standards for household appliances and lightbulbs. By increasing our energy efficiency, we are taking meaningful steps to protect our national security and economic prosperity and prevent further global warming. I will continue to fight for legislation that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move America toward energy independence. Sincerely, Richard J. Durbin United States Senator RJD/ab
